Linda, in the final step you have to change the image type to GIF, and then you will be able to pick the color to turn transparent. Changing the image type to a GIF is the most common reason why the black doesn't turn transparent.

It's transparent when I click on it also. Any idea why it won't work for me? Are there other settings on the perspectives page I might have wrong?

try resizing it and saving it with a new name
you did save it as a GIF file and check the transparency box - right?...

One of our contractors is asking for my drawings as a PDF. I usually send as a JPG with no problem. Is there a way to send as a PDF?

draw a shape with the rectangle tool or the close bezier, depending on the type of light fixture; remove the outline, reduce the transparency until you get the effect you want. Here I've used gradient fill to blend the light from top to bottom. At the ceiling you can see "cones" of light...
